John Deere 8100 to 8400 T – Deere's first big rubber-tracked tractors of the 1990s: T for the track version, 8400 wheeled, 8400 T tracked of the same class, own 8.1-litre six-cylinder, 136 to 191 kW
With the 8000 series, John Deere brought its first generation of big rubber-tracked farm tractors to market in the mid-1990s, taking on Caterpillar's Challenger, which had until then dominated the tracked-tractor segment of professional arable farming. The type logic is simple: the number orders the power class in ascending order, and the T suffix marks the tracked version against the otherwise identical wheeled tractor of the same class – the 8100 T, 8200 T and 8300 T ran only as tracked machines, while the 8400 and 8400 T stood side by side as wheeled and tracked versions. All models were powered by the same in-house 8.1-litre six-cylinder diesel that also worked in the contemporary wheeled tractors of the 8000 series.

The 8000 series' tracked tractors spread the high weight over a larger footprint and so lower ground pressure – an advantage on heavy, waterlogged soils that the wheeled version cannot offer, though it scores with lower wear and easier road travel.
On used tracked models, the condition of the rubber belt, rollers and drive wheels count, on all models the condition of gearbox and hydraulics and engine oil consumption, plus parts supply, which is more limited for undercarriage parts than for the standard tractor.
