John Deere 1140 A to 4840 – the Generation 40 tractors of the late 1970s from Waterloo and Mannheim: A as an upgrade stage, 4840 as the range's strongest two-axle model, Deere three- to six-cylinders, 41 to 133 kW
The 40 series replaced the 30 series in 1977 and was John Deere's last big generation of pure two-axle tractors before the 50 series arrived in the early 1980s with a wider cab offering; smaller models such as the 1140 came from the European plant in Mannheim, big ones like the 4040 and 4840 from Waterloo, Iowa. The type logic orders size in ascending order through the first digit of the four-digit number, and the letter A marks an upgrade stage introduced during production with detail changes to cab and electrics. The 4840, with its turbocharged six-cylinder, was the largest conventional two-axle tractor Deere built in this generation, before the 8440/8640 four-wheel-drive series took the lead.

40-series tractors are still numerous in European and North American farm fleets, valued as the last purely mechanical generation before electronics for their durability.
On used tractors, the condition of clutch and gearbox, leak-free hydraulics and lift linkage, rust on wings, bonnet and rear fenders, on the A model the electrics of the revised instruments, and good parts supply through Deere's dealer network count.
