J.I. Case hundred series (1953–1958) – the tractors from Racine between the letters and the 30s: 300 to 600, the hundreds number as size class, the 500 as first Case diesel, petrol, LPG and diesel

The hundred series replaced at J.I. Case of Racine, Wisconsin, the letter tractors of the pre-war period – the models S, D and LA that had run since 1939. The start was made in 1953 by the Case 500, the company's first diesel tractor, with a six-cylinder of 6.2 litres (377 cubic inches) and PTO; in 1955 the 400 followed as the medium and in 1956 the 300 as the small model, in 1957 the 600 as successor to the 500. The type logic: the hundreds number orders the size class in ascending order, the sub-variants 301, 311, 401 and 411 mark versions with a different layout or fuel type – petrol, LPG or diesel – Case in this period assigning the extra digits by equipment and drive. The engines are Case's own four- and six-cylinders with low rated speeds of 1,350 to 1,750 rpm, as characterise the American standard tractors of the 1950s.

In 1958 the 30 series (430 to 930) followed with the Case-o-matic torque-converter transmission – the hundreds are thus the short transitional generation in which Case introduced the diesel, and today sought-after collectors' pieces in the Desert Sunset livery.
