J.I. Case 90 series (1978–1983) – 1090 to 4890: Meltham three-cylinders, Racine six-cylinders with Power Shift and the articulated tractors from Bettendorf, 35 to 221 kW

The 90 series was Case's tractor programme of 1978 to 1983 – the predecessor of the 94s and, like them, assembled from three plants. The 1090 to 1690 come from Meltham in Yorkshire, the David Brown plant Case had taken over in 1972: three- and four-cylinders in Case colours, the 1690 with turbocharger as the top of the English line. The 2090 to 2590 came from Racine, Wisconsin, with Case's own six-cylinders and the Power Shift transmission Case had carried as its hallmark since the 1960s; the 4490, 4690 and 4890 were the articulated four-wheel-drive tractors from Bettendorf, Iowa, for the wheat fields of the Midwest. The suffix DT in the European designations stands for the four-wheel drive of the Meltham models.

The register lists 13 versions with 35.3 to 220.7 kW, 2,699 to 8,263 cm³ with three to six cylinders, torque from 157 to 660 Nm, unladen weights from 2,096 to 11,680 kg, lengths from 3,320 to 6,172 mm, widths from 1,850 to 2,515 mm and heights from 1,981 to 2,921 mm – all diesel.

The 90s brought the cab as standard and, in Racine, the full twelve-speed Power Shift equipment; their time ended with the farm crisis of the early 1980s, which led Case to the 94 revision and in 1985 to the merger with International Harvester.

Used, the Meltham models are common farmyard tractors in Europe; when buying, engine, transmission (Synchromesh or Hydra-Shift), hydraulics and front axle count, and on the Racine six-cylinders the Power Shift transmission and cab electrics.
