International Farmall Super series – the Super A to Super M-TA generation of 1952 to 1954: four-cylinder engines with the load-shift Torque Amplifier, 14 to 35 kW, diesel and multi-fuel MD and HV variants

The Super series is the last major overhaul of International Harvester's classic Farmall letter series before the 100 to 400 numbered ranges followed from 1954. Farmall A, H and M, styled from 1939 by Raymond Loewy, were the standard row-crop tractors; the Super versions of 1952 to 1954 received stronger engines, improved brakes, and, on the M-TA and MD-TA, the Torque Amplifier for the first time – an auxiliary gear stage that could be shifted under load. HV, AV-1 and MDV-TA are High-Clearance versions with greater ground clearance for cane and vegetable growing, MD and MDV-TA also being the diesel variants; the remaining models ran on the classic IH multi-fuel engine, on kerosene, petrol or a blend of the two.

In the early 1950s the Super series was the most widely built row-crop tractor in North America, and the Torque Amplifier shaped a control concept that International Harvester carried forward into the 1970s; it stands at the threshold between the post-war and the modern field tractor.

On these classics, what counts is the condition of crankshaft and oil pump, the tightness of the multi-fuel system or the condition of the injection pump on the diesel models, the function of the Torque Amplifier on the TA versions, tyres and front-axle bearings; parts for this widely built series are usually readily available through vintage-tractor specialists.
