IHC stands for International Harvester Corporation, the designation under which International Harvester sold its tractors outside the United States. The D series gathers small, two- and three-cylinder diesel tractors from the brand; the Standard suffix on the D 217 marks the classic four-wheel version with equal-sized wheels, as against the narrower row-crop body style, while the D 326 sits a class above with three cylinders and greater displacement. Drive is transmitted through a mechanical gearbox with a belt pulley for stationary applications, as was typical of small tractors of that period.

The register lists 2 versions of 12.45 to 17.6 kW (17 to 24 hp) from two to three cylinders of 1,217 to 1,825 cm³ at 1,900 rpm, unladen weights from 1,085 to 1,318 kg, lengths from 2,672 to 2,750 mm, widths from 1,581 to 1,640 mm and heights from 1,397 to 1,550 mm.
As small general-purpose tractors, the D 217 and D 326 targeted smaller farms and export to countries with a fragmented agricultural structure, where IHC competed in this segment with Massey-Harris, Ferguson and local brands.
On a used example, what counts is the condition of the injection pump, compression and cooling of the small diesel engine, rust on sheet-metal parts and wear in the steering and front axle; parts for these older small tractors today come mainly through specialist tractor restorers.
