With a gross weight of 3,500 kg, the Hummel SHW35 sits at the upper limit of EU trailer class O2, which covers trailers from 750 kg to 3,500 kg gross weight. Trailers in this class are towed by cars, light commercial vehicles or small tractors and cover the needs of trades, agriculture and private transport. Bodywork ranges from an open platform to a closed box, depending on the cargo to be carried.

With an unladen weight of 960 kg, payload comes to 2,540 kg. On six wheels, the trailer runs on three axles; the axle spacing within that axle group is 597 mm. At 2.00 m wide, it remains a narrow, manoeuvrable trailer for towing behind smaller tow vehicles.

Class O2 trailers usually run with a simple overrun brake rather than an air brake system: as the towing vehicle brakes, the drawbar pushes against a damper and automatically triggers the trailer's brakes. Because the gross weight exceeds 750 kg, licence category B alone is not enough; towing this trailer requires category BE. Even in this class, the coupling head, usually a ball coupling, needs regular checking for wear, since it is the trailer's only connection to the towing vehicle.

When buying a used unit, the chassis number on the type plate should match the vehicle papers before looking at technical details. Check the tyres for age, tread depth and sidewall cracking, check the coupling for play at the ball head or eye, inspect the brake lines for corrosion, and test the jockey wheels or support legs for smooth operation. Any spare wheel and its mounting, where fitted, should also be included in the check.
