The HM 5 from Holder, based in Metzingen, Baden-Württemberg, is a walking tractor, that is, a single-axle machine the operator guides on foot from behind or alongside rather than riding on a seat. This design differs fundamentally from the four-wheeled field tractors of Holder's other series.

The air-cooled single-cylinder engine of 205 cc runs on a two-stroke petrol mixture at a 1:50 ratio and delivers 3.7 kW, or 5 hp, at 3,600 rpm. Bore and stroke are 65.09 mm and 61.9 mm. The gearbox was available with one forward and one reverse gear, or with two forward and two reverse gears, and the front tyres came in 4.00-8 AS or 6-9 AS sizes.
A walking tractor this size is built for the smallest plots: vegetable and kitchen gardens, narrow beds and areas a seated tractor simply cannot enter. The choice between one or two gears per direction let the operator match travel speed to the mounted tool, and the two tyre sizes suited different ground conditions.
When buying such an old walking tractor, the clutch and gear-shift mechanism matter most, since both are worked constantly while guiding the machine on foot, along with the two-stroke engine's compression and the correct petrol-oil mixture ratio. Also worth checking are the condition of the fitted tyres and corrosion on the sheet-metal parts; attachments and spare parts for this class of machine can now only be found through suppliers specialising in historic small equipment.
