The single-cylinder diesel engine of 500 cc delivers 10 hp at 1,700 to 2,200 rpm and uses thermosiphon cooling. At a weight of only 390 kg, a length of 2,200 mm, a height of 830 mm and a width of just 600 mm, the ED II reaches a top speed of 13.5 km/h.
The exceptionally narrow track of just 600 mm combined with a very low build height of 830 mm makes the ED II a machine for the tightest row crops, such as vineyards or espalier orchards, where a standard-width tractor cannot fit. The low weight of 390 kg keeps ground pressure low and protects sensitive soil between the rows, while the low height lets it pass under low branches and support structures.
When buying such a narrow and old Holder ED II, free circulation in the thermosiphon cooling matters, since deposits in the water jacket can cause local overheating. Also worth checking are compression and injection of the single-cylinder diesel, rust on the frame and sheet-metal parts, the condition of the clutch and gearbox, and the state of the narrow axles and tyres; spare parts for this rare narrow-gauge tractor can now only be obtained through specialist suppliers and collectors of historic agricultural machinery.
