Hermann Lanz of Aalen, independent of Heinrich Lanz AG in Mannheim, built medium-sized diesel tractors in the D 47 series in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The D 28, with the TD suffix, was among the somewhat more powerful versions of this series. As with comparable manufacturers of the period, the emphasis lay on simplicity and ease of repair.

The D 28 (TD) is powered by a water-cooled two-cylinder engine of 2,850 cc, producing 28 hp, or 20.5 kW, at 1,600 rpm. At a weight of 1,750 kg, a length of 2,830 mm, a height of 1,500 mm, a width of 1,540 mm and a wheelbase of 1,760 mm, the machine reaches a top speed of 20 km/h.

With a displacement of almost 2,850 cc across only two cylinders, the engine ran with a comparatively large swept volume per cylinder, which at low engine speed delivered high torque. This design suited pulling and ploughing work on medium-sized farms. Its sturdy build also tolerated occasional overload during hard field work.

When buying, the condition of the injection pump and injectors matters, along with the radiator and water pump for leaks. The gearbox, clutch and brakes should be checked for wear, and the frame for rust; spare parts for this small and now rare manufacturer are only available through a specialist circle of collectors. The condition of seals and fuel lines, prone to hardening and cracking with age, is also worth checking.
