Hermann Lanz of Aalen, independent of Heinrich Lanz AG in Mannheim, built smaller diesel tractors in the D 24 series in the late 1950s and early 1960s for agricultural operations. The D 124 was among the final versions of this series. As with other small tractors of the period, the emphasis lay on a simple, robust drive for smaller areas rather than high engine output or comfort.

The D 124 is powered by a water-cooled two-cylinder engine of 2,164 cc, producing 25 hp, or 18.3 kW, at 1,660 rpm. At a weight of 1,665 kg, a length of 3,100 mm, a height of 1,350 mm, a width of 1,550 mm and a wheelbase of 1,900 mm, the machine reaches a top speed of 20 km/h.
At a height of 1,350 mm combined with a length of 3,100 mm, the D 124 is notably long and low, lowering the centre of gravity and improving stability. A two-cylinder engine of this power class was built for light to medium field work on smaller farms. The compact build also made it easier to turn on small or irregularly shaped plots.
When buying, the condition of the injection pump and injectors matters, along with the radiator and water pump for leaks. The gearbox, clutch and brakes should be checked for wear; spare parts for this small and now rare manufacturer are only available through a specialist circle of collectors. The condition of seals and fuel lines, which harden and crack with age, is also worth assessing.
