The D 7506-Gas belongs to the HNG 3 series from Heinrich Lanz of Mannheim from the war years 1941 and 1942, when scarce fuel rations forced many German vehicles to convert to wood-gas power. The machine is a version of the well-known Lanz Bulldog field tractor converted to a wood-gas generator.

The D 7506-Gas is powered by a water-cooled single-cylinder engine of 4,767 cc, running on wood gas, producing 20 hp, or 14.6 kW, at 850 rpm. At a weight of 2,925 kg, a length of 3,010 mm, a height of 2,010 mm and a width of 1,600 mm, with a wheelbase of 1,680 mm, the machine is a medium-weight tractor whose top speed of 15.1 km/h was somewhat lower than the normally fuelled version because of the wood-gas installation.

A wood-gas generator gasifies solid fuels such as wood into a combustible gas that drives the actual combustion engine, and was a common emergency solution during the war years when liquid fuels were scarce. The lower output compared with similar Bulldog engines of the same size running on oil or diesel resulted from the lower energy content of the wood gas produced compared with liquid fuel.

When buying a D 7506-Gas, the condition of the wood-gas generator and its piping matters most, as far as this installation survives, along with the radiator and coolant hoses of the single-cylinder engine. Also worth checking are the clutch and gearbox for wear noises and the brakes; a surviving wood-gas installation is today a rare piece of technical history, for which parts are only obtainable from specialist collectors.
