The Feldmotor was an early series from Heinrich Lanz of Mannheim from the 1920s, from a time when the manufacturer still had petrol-powered draft machines in its range alongside its first Bulldog diesel tractors. The FMD model represents one of these early, multi-cylinder versions before the final shift to the single-cylinder Bulldog concept that would later define the brand.

The FMD is powered by a water-cooled four-cylinder petrol engine of 8,340 cc, producing 38 hp, or 27.8 kW, at 750 rpm. At a weight of 3,800 kg, a length of 3,675 mm, a height of 2,000 mm and a width of 1,600 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,250 mm, the machine is a heavy tractor whose top speed of 6.9 km/h was built purely for draft work.

A large-displacement four-cylinder of over 8 litres running at just 750 rpm delivers its torque already at the lowest speeds and was typical of the heavy draft work of those years, when tractors mainly drove the plough, harrow and stationary threshing machines via the belt. Such a machine was built for heavy tillage and driving work machines, not for road transport.

When buying such an old Feldmotor, the condition of the frame, radiator and cylinder block of the large four-cylinder matters most, as far as these components survive in original form. A vehicle of this age is generally a collector's piece, for which parts can only be sourced through custom fabrication or from specialist vintage-vehicle restorers.
