Hart-Parr 18-36: proprietary two-cylinder petrol tractor, 8,200 cc, 36 hp/23.8 kW at 800 rpm and 2,838 kg weight, built in the United States in the 1920s
Hart-Parr was an American tractor manufacturer, one of the pioneers of tractor building, and by the 1920s one of the established brands in the North American farm machinery market. The two-part type designation then in use, such as 18-36, gave separately the drawbar pull rating and the belt output, two different measurement points on the same machine.

The 18-36 is powered by its own Hart-Parr two-cylinder petrol engine of 8,200 cc, producing 36 hp, or 23.8 kW, at 800 rpm. At a weight of 2,838 kg, the machine is a heavy, low-revving tractor whose top speed of 4.8 km/h was built purely for draft work, not for road travel.
A two-cylinder petrol engine of over 8 litres running at just 800 rpm delivers its torque already in the lowest rev range and was typical of early American tractor design, built for pulling power at the plough and belt drive for stationary threshing machines. A tractor of this design was intended for heavy field work and driving stationary machinery via the belt, not for fast transport runs.
When buying such an old Hart-Parr, the condition of the cylinders, pistons and cooling of the proprietary two-cylinder engine matters, along with corrosion on the frame and sheet-metal parts. Also worth checking are the clutch and gearbox for wear, plus the belt pulley for stationary work; parts for an American tractor of this age are, in Europe, only obtainable from specialist collectors and vintage-vehicle restorers.
