The T903 is powered by a water-cooled Perkins diesel engine producing 89 hp, or 66 kW. The machine therefore falls into the mid power class of agricultural tractors, suited to farms with larger areas and heavier mounted implements, without yet reaching the class of large six-cylinder field tractors.

A Perkins diesel engine is regarded in agricultural machinery as a proven, widely used unit with good availability of parts and servicing, regardless of which manufacturer builds the vehicle around it. A tractor of this output with an engageable front-axle drive is built for tillage, driving heavier mounted implements through the pto shaft and hauling larger trailed loads.

When buying a T903, the condition of the Perkins engine matters, in particular oil consumption and running noise, along with the function of the front axle and its engagement clutch. Also worth checking are the radiator and coolant hoses, the clutch and gearbox for wear noises, and the brakes; parts for the Perkins engine are usually readily available, less so manufacturer-specific components.
