In the late 1930s and early 1940s, the SR series was one of Hanomag's larger field tractors from Hanover, aimed at farms and municipal operations that needed a stronger, multi-cylinder diesel tractor for heavy draft work than the manufacturer's smaller series.

The SR 38/45 is powered by a water-cooled four-cylinder diesel engine of 5,195 cc, producing 38 hp, or 27 kW, at a rated speed of 1,100 to 1,300 rpm. At a weight of 3,800 kg, a length of 3,420 mm, a height of 1,520 mm and a width of 1,760 mm, with a wheelbase of 1,990 mm, the machine is a heavy tractor whose top speed of 16 km/h was built purely for field work.

A large-displacement four-cylinder of over 5 litres running at a comparatively low speed delivers its torque already in the lower rev range and is built for pulling power rather than high revs. A tractor of this weight class was built for heavy tillage, pulling large trailed loads and driving powerful mounted implements through the pto shaft, not for fast road travel.

When buying an SR 38/45, the condition of the radiator, water pump and coolant hoses matters, along with corrosion on the frame, wings and bonnet. Also worth checking are the clutch and gearbox for wear noises and the brakes; spare parts for this heavy pre-war Hanomag are scarce and usually only obtainable from specialist suppliers and salvage stock.
