Hanomag R 28 N: water-cooled four-cylinder diesel tractor from the N series, 2,799 cc, 28 hp/21 kW and 1,740 kg weight, built in the early 1950s
Hanomag is a long-established German engineering manufacturer based in Hanover that ran its own tractor division for decades alongside trucks and construction machinery; the brand lives on today in the construction-equipment business of Komatsu Hanomag. The N series was one of the manufacturer's smaller field tractors in the early 1950s, aimed at farms that needed a simple, robust diesel tractor for everyday field work in the post-war years.

The R 28 N is powered by a water-cooled four-cylinder diesel engine of 2,799 cc, producing 28 hp, or 21 kW, at 1,500 rpm. At a weight of 1,740 kg, a length of 2,830 mm, a height of 1,450 mm and a width of 1,580 mm, with a wheelbase of 1,800 mm, the machine is a compact tractor in the lower power class, whose top speed of 16.8 km/h was suited to field work and light road transport.
A water-cooled four-cylinder ran more smoothly and evenly than the single-cylinder units common at the time, but brought a radiator, water pump and hose connections as additional wear points. A tractor of this power class was built for tillage on medium-sized farms, driving mounted implements through the pto shaft and light haulage, not for heavy draft work with large trailed loads.
When buying such an old Hanomag tractor, the condition of the radiator, water pump and coolant hoses matters, along with corrosion on the radiator shell and sheet-metal parts. Also worth checking are the clutch, gearbox and final drive for play and unusual noise, plus the brakes; spare parts for a Hanomag tractor of this age are now only available from specialist suppliers and salvage stock.
