Hanomag built the Granit range in the 1950s at its home site in Hanover; at the time the company was known alongside tractors also for trucks and construction machinery. The four recorded types Granit 500 (S), Granit 500/1/S, Granit 501 (S) and Granit 501 E (S) show the gradual development of the series; the S denoted a fast-gear version.

Unladen weights lie between 2,070 and 2,340 kg, lengths between 3,420 and 3,550 mm, widths between 1,580 and 1,765 mm, and heights between 1,540 and 1,730 mm.
The Granit tractors were aimed at medium arable farms during West Germany's post-war reconstruction of the 1950s and competed with similarly positioned brands such as Lanz, Fahr and Hürlimann, which at the time likewise offered three-cylinder diesels of this power class. The Hanomag brand was well known and well regarded in West Germany at the time, which supported sales of the Granit tractors through an extensive dealer network.
On a used purchase of such a Hanomag classic, check the condition and tightness of the three-cylinder diesel, wear on the clutch and mechanical gearbox, and corrosion on sheet metal and the frame; parts are now only available through specialists and tractor exchanges.
