A single-cylinder engine of nearly 1.2 litres was, in the post-war years, a rugged, easily serviced drive for small and medium-sized farms that valued reliability and low upkeep over high revs or smoothness. For a maker of agricultural machinery that had previously focused mainly on implements, such a rugged single-cylinder tractor was a natural entry into tractor building.
When buying an HS 15 secondhand, the condition of the clutch and gearbox and visible corrosion on sheet-metal and frame parts after so many decades matter most. Also worth checking are the crankshaft bearings of the large single-cylinder engine, the brakes and, if fitted, the hydraulic system for mounted implements; spare parts for this rare, low-volume machine are now only available through specialist suppliers or custom manufacture.
