The 4200 is powered by a water-cooled three-cylinder diesel engine of 1,004 cc, producing 19 hp, or 14 kW, at 2,500 rpm. At a weight of 855 kg, a length of 2,055 mm and a width of 1,045 mm, it is a light, compact tractor for smaller farms.
A water-cooled three-cylinder diesel engine of around a litre, combined with a comparatively low weight, was built for tillage with lighter implements, mowing work and running a power take-off at standard speed. Compared with air-cooled models, water cooling allowed steadier cooling performance even under prolonged full load, but called for regular checks of coolant level and antifreeze protection in return.
When buying a Gutbrod 4200 secondhand, the condition of the radiator and water pump of the water-cooled engine, and the diesel engine's injection pump, matter most. Also worth checking are the clutch and gearbox for wear, and the frame and sheet-metal parts for rust; spare parts for this Gutbrod series are available through specialist suppliers and collector circles, though radiator parts for the water-cooled version are scarcer than for Gutbrod's air-cooled models.
