GMC has built the Savana since 1996 as the technical twin of the Chevrolet Express, the classic US full-size van with a ladder frame and rear-wheel drive. The numbers 1500, 2500 and 3500 denote the payload class from half-ton to one-ton, SLE the mid-range trim line; the entries as Savana Explorer refer to conversions by the Explorer Van Company, a specialist in US vans that turns the panel van into a comfortable passenger vehicle with additional equipment.
