Fortschritt Hangtraktor ZT 305: water-cooled four-cylinder diesel four-wheel-drive tractor built for steep-slope work, 100 hp and 6,500 kg weight, built in 1981
Fortschritt was the name of an agricultural-machinery combine in East Germany, which also included the Schönebeck tractor works that built the ZT series. The ZT 305 was built in 1981 as a hillside tractor designed specifically for use on steep terrain.

The ZT 305 is powered by a water-cooled four-cylinder diesel engine producing 100 hp, and is fitted with four-wheel drive. At a weight of 6,500 kg, it carries 16-20 tyres at the front and 18.4-34 tyres at the rear, an unusually mismatched tyre set for a hillside tractor.
Unlike an ordinary field tractor, a hillside tractor is purpose-built for use on steep gradients: a low centre of gravity, four-wheel drive and a high dead weight provide stability and traction on slopes such as those found in vineyards, mountain meadows or hilly arable land, where an ordinary tractor would risk tipping over or losing grip. The four-wheel drive additionally spreads drawbar force to the front axle.
When buying such an old hillside tractor secondhand, the condition of the front axle differential and the four-wheel-drive joints, and the tyres given the high weight and the mismatched sizes, matter most. Also worth checking are the diesel engine's injection pump and injectors, the cooling system, and the brakes and steering, since these components are under particular strain during slope work.
