Fordson was the tractor brand within the Ford group, and the Super Major was the standard model of the 1950s and 1960s. County Commercial Cars of Fleet in southern England built the Super4 on this basis, with permanent four-wheel drive, made from 1958 to 1964.

The Super4 is powered by a water-cooled four-cylinder diesel engine of 3,610 cc, producing 52 hp, or 38 kW, at 2,000 rpm. The machine rests on a half-frame, weighs 3,800 kg and reaches a top speed of 25 km/h with a 12/4 gearbox; identical 12.4-36 AS tyres are fitted front and rear.

Permanent four-wheel drive with equal-sized tyres front and rear spreads drive force and weight more evenly across all four wheels than an ordinary tractor with larger rear and smaller front wheels, considerably improving traction on loose, wet or sloping ground. The half-frame reinforces the front section of the machine, which houses the additional front-axle drivetrain.

When buying a Fordson County Super4 secondhand, the condition of the front axle differential, joints and transfer case of the permanent four-wheel-drive system matters most, since these components carry heavy loads under continuous use. Also worth checking are the half-frame for cracking, the 12/4 gearbox for smooth shifting, and the diesel engine's injection pump and injectors.
