Backhoe loaders such as the Fermec types combine a front loader and a rear backhoe on one chassis and in this power class were the workhorse on building sites, in civil engineering and in municipal maintenance work; Perkins diesel engines were common in this vehicle class among numerous British manufacturers. The 'Industrial' designation in the 820 Industrial name reflects its origin in the Massey Ferguson Industrial range, which Fermec directly continued.

For a used Fermec, the condition and wear of the bucket, backhoe arm and loader bucket, the tightness of the hydraulic cylinders and lines, the condition of the Perkins diesel engine and gearbox, and wear on the axles, brakes and tyres are the key checks. Spare parts today run through the brand's successor, Terex, as well as independent construction equipment dealers.
