The TE range is Harry Ferguson’s small all-purpose tractor, built under licence from 1946 by the Standard Motor Company in Coventry (Banner Lane plant) after his American partnership with Ford ended. Its grey paint earned it the nickname ‘Grey Fergie’. At the heart of the TE-20 was Ferguson’s own three-point hydraulics with draft control, which for the first time linked implements firmly to the tractor through top and lower links and became the worldwide standard. Within the range the models differed mainly in fuel: alongside the petrol version there was a diesel version, represented here by the TE-D 20 and TE-F 20.

The register lists 2 versions with 18.4 to 19.9 kW (25 to 27 hp) from four-cylinder engines of 2,088 to 2,092 cm³, unladen weights of 1,100 to 1,225 kg, lengths of 2,920 to 2,921 mm, widths of 1,620 to 1,625 mm and a height of 1,320 mm at a rated speed of 1,850 rpm.
The TE range was one of the most widely built post-war tractors in Britain and its export markets, and with its standardised three-point linkage it laid the technical foundation that virtually all later tractors and implements followed. Its simple, robust design made it the entry point into mechanisation for small and medium farms far beyond Britain.
When buying used, check the condition of the hydraulic pump and lift mechanism, the tightness of engine and gearbox, rust on the bodywork and mudguards, and the brakes. Thanks to the huge production numbers, parts supply for engine, clutch and hydraulics through specialist Ferguson dealers and reproduction parts remains good.
