The Fendt 512 Vario carries a water-cooled four-cylinder diesel engine with 4,038 cm³ of displacement, producing 110 hp, or 81 kW, at 2,100 rpm, with 550 Nm of torque; exhaust treatment uses AdBlue. At 6,050 kg, 4,453 mm long, 2,930 mm high, 2,451 mm wide and with a 2,560 mm wheelbase, the machine reaches a top speed of 50 km/h.

With a 50 km/h top speed, the 512 Vario goes beyond the common 40 km/h limit of many standard tractors, shortening haulage runs between the yard and more distant fields. The stepless transmission keeps the four-cylinder engine within its economical speed range regardless of travel speed. The AdBlue exhaust treatment places the engine in a later, stricter emissions tier than earlier, purely mechanically controlled Fendt diesel engines.

When buying a tractor with AdBlue exhaust treatment used, the condition of the SCR system and the AdBlue tank and lines matters, as these can cause problems in frost or after long standing periods. Also worth checking are the stepless transmission on a test drive across the whole speed range, the tightness of the hydraulic connections, and the condition of the axles given the machine's weight.
