Farmall was the tractor brand of the American International Harvester Company, which was formed in 1902 from the merger of the farm-machinery makers McCormick and Deering and went on to become one of the largest farm-equipment groups in the United States. The FG dates from 1940 and represents the brand's classic pre-war construction. 1,543 units of this model were built – a modest number compared with Farmall's large mass-produced ranges.

The four-cylinder petrol engine of 2,040cc produces 20 hp (14.7 kW) at 1,650 rpm and drives the rear wheels through a four-speed gearbox. At 1,830 kg, the FG reaches a top speed of 14.7 km/h. The block construction with an auxiliary frame uses the engine block as a load-bearing element, supplemented by an additional frame.
A petrol-engined rear-wheel-drive tractor of this power class was built for row-crop farming with simple mounted implements. Block construction with an auxiliary frame is lighter and cheaper than a full ladder-frame chassis, but transmits engine vibration more directly into the chassis.
When buying one of these tractors second-hand, the carburettor and ignition system of the petrol engine matter, since different wear parts need checking than on a diesel engine, along with the synchromesh and gears of the four-speed gearbox. As only 1,543 units were built, original parts are correspondingly scarce and often have to be remanufactured.
