Eicher, the Bavarian tractor maker, built a dedicated narrow-track range alongside its standard-width tractors for work where a normal-width tractor will not fit between the rows – in vineyards, orchards and hop gardens, for example. The 3705 belongs to this narrow-track range and was built between 1970 and 1976, a period in which the specialised needs of viticulture and fruit growing increasingly called for their own slim tractor models.

The air-cooled two-cylinder diesel engine of 1,963cc produces 30 hp (22.06 kW) at 2,000 rpm. At only 907 mm wide, 1,153 kg in weight, 2,658 mm long and 1,897 mm high, the 3705 is noticeably slimmer than a standard tractor of comparable output; the wheelbase is 1,600 mm and the top speed 18.64 km/h.
Narrow-track tractors are designed for minimal width rather than for ground clearance or drawbar pull, so they can pass between closely planted tree or vine rows without damaging the plants. The lower weight makes turning at the row end easier, but on sloping ground it demands more attention to stability than a wider machine would.
When buying one of these narrow-track tractors second-hand, it is worth checking the steering knuckles and linkage for corrosion, since vineyard and orchard equipment is regularly exposed to plant-protection chemicals. Also worth checking are the air-cooled cylinder heads for cracks, the power take-off drive for mounted implements, and play in the narrow front axle, which takes extra strain during tight turning manoeuvres.
