In the 4000 range from the production period marked Phase III, the Bavarian manufacturer Eicher offered four-cylinder versions alongside three-cylinder ones. The 4060 A was built from 1978 to 1980. The step from three to four cylinders widened the range's offering upward without yet moving into the class of large-displacement six-cylinder versions.

The Eicher 4060 A carries a water-cooled four-cylinder diesel engine with 3,335 cm³ of displacement, producing 60 hp, or 44 kW, at 2,100 rpm, and developing 227 Nm of torque. At 2,950 kg, 3,790 mm long, 2,340 mm high, 1,940 mm wide and with a 2,295 mm wheelbase, the machine reaches a top speed of 25 km/h.

With four cylinders instead of three, the 4060 A runs more smoothly at the same speed than the smaller three-cylinder versions of the same range and delivers more power at 44 kW for heavier implements and towed loads. Its 227 Nm of torque provides steady pulling power for draft work such as ploughing. On medium-sized arable farms, a four-cylinder engine of this power class covered both field work and heavier haulage without the need for an additional, larger tractor.

When buying a four-cylinder engine of this age used, the condition of the crankshaft bearings and head gasket matters, as a fault here is more involved to fix than on smaller engines. Also worth checking are the cooling performance, the injection pump, and corrosion damage to the frame and mudguards, common on tractors of this build era.
