The water-cooled six-cylinder diesel engine with 11,100 cm³ of displacement produces 385 hp, or 283 kW, at 2,100 rpm. At 12,280 kg, 5,090 mm long, 3,750 mm high and 2,600 mm wide, the machine reaches a top speed of 40 km/h with a 2,900 mm wheelbase.
With 283 kW from a large six-cylinder engine and a weight of over 12 tonnes, the DT 38 sits far above the power class of ordinary field tractors and is built to drive shredding and processing equipment for green waste and wood, where high engine output has to be converted continuously into mechanical work at the cutting or grinding unit. A top speed of 40 km/h lets a machine like this move between job sites on its own wheels rather than needing a low-loader for shorter distances.
When buying such a powerful machine used, the condition of the large six-cylinder engine under the heavy load cycling of shredding work matters, particularly oil consumption and the cooling system.
