Deutz of Cologne is one of the long-established German makers of diesel engines and tractors. The F3M 417 dates from a period when, alongside the air-cooled engines that later became typical of Deutz, water-cooled three-cylinder engines were also built for use in medium-weight field tractors.

The three-cylinder diesel engine with 5,768 cm³ displacement is water-cooled and produces 50 hp, or 36.6 kW, at 1,350 rpm. At 3,550 kg weight, 3,650 mm length, 1,930 mm width and 1,880 mm height, the F3M 417 belongs to the medium-weight class of standard tractors of its era, with markedly more displacement and weight than the small single-cylinder tractors.
With a top speed of 20 km/h, the F3M 417 falls into driving licence category L (up to 40 km/h). Water cooling with a radiator, water pump and thermostat allows a more even operating temperature than air cooling, but requires frost protection and regular checks of the cooling circuit. A three-cylinder engine of this size was built for classic field and drawbar work on medium-sized farms.
When buying such an old water-cooled Deutz, check the condition of the radiator, water pump and coolant hoses, which are often leaking or scaled up after decades. Also check the cylinder head gasket, the injection pump and the condition of the sheet-metal parts, since spare parts for this early three-cylinder range are barely available new and usually have to be sourced second-hand or remanufactured.
