Deutz is a company from Cologne and one of the best-known makers of air-cooled diesel engines in tractor building. The F1L 514 Plantage was built from 1951 to 1955. The Plantage name points to a narrow-built version for working between row crops, for instance in orchards and vineyards, where a wide standard tractor would not fit.

The air-cooled single-cylinder diesel engine has a displacement of 1,330 cc and produces 11 kW (15 hp) at 1,650 rpm. The F1L 514 Plantage is 2,510 mm long, only 1,200 mm wide and 1,540 mm high, with a wheelbase of 1,584 mm and a weight of 1,900 kg. Its top speed is 20 km/h.

At only 1,200 mm wide, while also heavier than comparable standard versions of the same engine, the Plantage tractor is built for stability in narrow lanes rather than a wide track; the extra weight acts as ballast that improves stability on slopes and between rows. The air-cooled single-cylinder engine manages without a radiator and coolant, which keeps maintenance demands low.

When buying such a narrow-built plantation tractor, check the fan and cooling fins for dirt, the injection pump and nozzle, the clutch and gearbox, and the condition of the narrow axles and wings, which are especially prone to scrape damage when working between rows. Spare parts are supplied by the Deutz parts trade and specialist dealers in classic tractors.
