Deutz is a company from Cologne and one of the oldest engine manufacturers in Europe. The Deutzer Trekker recorded here was built in 1919/1920, in the early phase of dedicated tractor manufacturing, when farm machinery was beginning to move on from being a plain stationary engine to a self-propelled draft vehicle.

The four-cylinder petrol engine is rated at only 800 rpm and produces 29 kW (40 hp); power is transmitted through a gearbox with three forward gears and one reverse gear. The Trekker is 4,400 mm long, 1,800 mm wide and 2,700 mm high, and weighs 3,600 kg. Its top speed is only 6 km/h.
Such a low engine speed of 800 rpm at a weight of 3.6 tonnes reflects the massive, slow-turning engineering of early tractor technology, from a time when light, high-revving engines were not yet available. At 6 km/h, the Trekker was built purely for field and draft work, not for road transport; the modest gearbox with three forward gears and just one reverse gear was sufficient for these tasks.
A vehicle of this age is essentially a technical collector's piece. When acquiring one, check the engine block and frame for cracks and material fatigue after more than a hundred years, the ignition system and magneto of the petrol engine, and the tightness of the cooling system. Spare parts are practically unavailable through regular trade any more, only through custom fabrication or from collectors of historic farm machinery.
