David Brown 900 – multi-fuel tractor of 1957/58 from Meltham, Yorkshire: water-cooled four-cylinder of 2,707 cc, offered on diesel, kerosene or petrol, 40 hp/29.9 kW, 1,814 kg
David Brown was a British tractor manufacturer based in Meltham, near Huddersfield in Yorkshire. The 900 series was built between October 1957 and November 1958 and was offered as a multi-fuel tractor: on diesel, on kerosene (TVO) or on petrol. This choice was common in Britain for a long time, because agricultural kerosene was taxed favourably and farmers could switch fuel without changing the machine.

The engine is a water-cooled four-cylinder of 2,707 cc. On diesel it produces 40 hp (29.9 kW) at 2,200 rpm and 149 Nm of torque; on kerosene the figure is 37 hp, on petrol 40 to 45 hp. The 900 is 2,953 mm long, 1,231 mm wide and 1,384 mm high, with a wheelbase of 1,911 mm and a weight of 1,814 kg. Its top speed is 25 km/h.
A four-cylinder of nearly 2.7 litres with water cooling sits in the mid power class of tractors of its era, built for ploughing, harrowing and PTO-driven implements in mixed farm work. Kerosene engines of this design are usually started on petrol and switched to the cheaper fuel once warm, which is why an extra carburettor and a change-over valve belong to the equipment.
When buying a used example of such a multi-fuel engine, first check which fuel it last ran on and whether the carburettor, vaporiser and fuel change-over are still complete – surviving examples often lack part of the kerosene equipment. Beyond that, check the radiator and water pump, clutch and gearbox, hydraulic tightness and rust on wings and sheet metal. Parts come from specialist vintage-tractor dealers, since David Brown no longer exists as an independent tractor manufacturer.
