At 4 to 7.5 tonnes gross weight, they mark the upper end of what can still be towed by an ordinary lorry combination before class O4 and true semi-trailers begin.
On a used example, the condition of the chassis and side members, rust at welds and mounts, the brake system with drums or discs, axle bearings and suspension, the drawbar eye or coupling and tyre tread and age all count. On the load bed, check the timber or chequer plate, ramps and lashing points; spare parts for axles and brakes come from the usual suppliers such as BPW and Knott.
