Crown School Bus comes from Crown Coach Corporation of Los Angeles, California, an American manufacturer that built buses from the 1930s into the 1990s and, with its rear-engined Supercoach, was one of the best-known school bus builders in the United States. At a gross vehicle weight of 16,420 kg, this bus falls into the heavy N3 class.

For this 1988 model the register lists a six-cylinder engine of 7,000 cm³. Kerb weight is 9,669 kg, gross vehicle weight 16,420 kg. The vehicle is 10,960 mm long, 2,460 mm wide, with a wheelbase of 5,900 mm.

Between kerb and gross weight around 6,750 kg of headroom remains, which in a school bus is taken up almost entirely by the pupils themselves, explaining the high payload capacity typical of this vehicle class. At 10,960 mm long with a 5,900 mm wheelbase, the body has room for the many rows of seating typical of school buses this size.

For the purchase of such a historic bus, check corrosion on the chassis, floor structure and body, the condition of the engine and gearbox, brake system operation given the high gross weight, and the seals of windows, roof and emergency exits. Parts today are mostly available through restorers who specialise in American school buses. A thorough check of the wiring for the stop-arm and warning lights is also worthwhile, since these safety systems are often repaired with non-original parts over the decades.
