Büssing, founded in Braunschweig in 1903 and recognisable by its stylised lion emblem, was one of Germany's most traditional truck and bus manufacturers before the brand was absorbed into MAN in 1971. The type logic ranges from the plain LS series through the later BS nomenclature to the flagship models given resounding names — Commodore, Konsul and President; the U series denoted Büssing's characteristic underfloor-engine construction, in which the engine sat lying beneath the chassis rather than ahead of the cab.

With its underfloor-engine technology, Büssing shaped both heavy long-haul trucks and line-service buses in the 1950s and 1960s, standing alongside Mercedes-Benz, MAN and Krupp for the post-war German commercial vehicle industry; after the takeover, many of its design features fed into MAN's ranges of the 1970s.
