Btc Bavaria: small West German single-cylinder diesel tractor from 1949 with evaporative cooling, 1,099cc and a top speed of 41 km/h
The Btc brand with its “Bavaria” model belongs to the small German tractor builders of the period directly after the Second World War, who met the demand of small farms for their own motorised power with simple single-cylinder diesel tractors. The Bavaria was built in 1949.

The Bavaria carries a single-cylinder diesel engine with 1,099 cm³ of displacement, producing 11 hp, or 8.1 kW, at 1,150 rpm, and works with evaporative cooling without its own radiator. At 1,150 kg, 3,370 mm long and 1,375 mm wide and 1,450 mm high, the machine reaches a top speed of 41 km/h, high for such a small tractor.
Evaporative cooling was common in simple single-cylinder diesel engines of the postwar period, as it needed no radiator, water pump or fan, saving components and maintenance at the cost of higher water consumption in operation. The comparatively high top speed of 41 km/h points to a road gear ratio meant for transport runs alongside the actual field work.
When buying such an early single-cylinder tractor with evaporative cooling used, the cooling water level and the tightness of the cooling jacket matter most, since running dry with this design quickly leads to engine damage. Also worth checking are the condition of the injection pump, the clutch and corrosion damage to the frame, which is common on such old small tractors.
