The American manufacturer Big Bud built its tractors at its plant in Havre, Montana, and in the 1970s specialised in exceptionally large, articulated four-wheel-drive tractors for farming on the North American Great Plains. The 16V-747 was built in 1977 as a one-off and is still regarded as one of the largest farm tractors ever built.

The sixteen-cylinder diesel engine with 24,140 cm³ of displacement produces 559 kW, or 760 hp, at 2,100 rpm. With an operating weight of around 49,900 kg, a length with hitch of 8,690 mm, a width to the outer tyres of 6,350 mm, a height of 4,270 mm and a wheelbase of 4,950 mm, the machine exceeds every usual scale for a farm tractor.

The articulated steering between two frame sections still gives a usable turning radius for a wheeled vehicle of this class despite the enormous size, while the four-wheel drive turns the engine's pulling force into traction on the soft soils of Great Plains farming. The top speed of 20 km/h shows the machine was built for field work with very wide cultivators and seeders, not for road travel.

With such a rare one-off build, spare parts are the central concern: the drivetrain, axles and articulation joint are matched to a single vehicle, for which no series parts exist in ordinary trade. Also worth checking are the condition of tyres this size, the tightness of the many hydraulic steering lines, and possible cracking at the articulation joint itself.
