Onega plant TDT-40: lighter Soviet tracked skidding tractor from Karelia with a 4,500cc diesel, 40 hp and a weight of 6,500 kg

The Onega plant in Petrozavodsk in the Soviet republic of Karelia also built skidding tractors under the TДT range, needed across the vast forest areas of northern Russia for forestry work. The TDT-40 was built between 1956 and 1958 as a lighter version of this design.

The TDT-40 carries a four-cylinder diesel engine with 4,500 cm³ of displacement, producing 40 hp at 1,500 rpm. At 6,500 kg, 4,500 mm long, with a 2,040 mm wheelbase and 1,830 mm width and 2,430 mm height, the machine is noticeably lighter than the larger TDT-60 of the same range name, but is built as a similar tracked tractor for rough forest terrain.

Like other skidding tractors, the TDT-40 hauled felled logs out of the stand using a rear cable winch, with the load partly dragged along the ground and partly lifted to avoid damaging the remaining timber. The tracked undercarriage kept ground pressure low even on soft forest floor and allowed work independent of paved roads.

When buying used, the tracks, track rollers and winch are the critical wear parts, as they work in constant contact with soil, stones and branches in the forest. The frame around the towing point and cable guide should be examined for cracks, as should the cooling system seals, which often leak after decades of service. Working independently of any paved road was essential in logging areas that often had no road network at all.
