The four-cylinder diesel engine of 4,750 cm³ displacement produces 59 kW (80 hp) at 2,200 rpm. With an unladen weight of 3,160 kg, a length of 3,815 mm, a width of 1,970 mm, a height of 2,470 mm and a wheelbase of 2,370 mm, the MTS-80 is compactly built; the rated speed of 2,200 rpm draws a comparatively high power output from its 4,750 cm³ displacement.
A four-cylinder of 4.75 litres displacement at 59 kW was, in the 1970s, one of the most widely built motorisations of Soviet farm machinery; the PTO runs at the standardised speeds of 540 or 1,000 rpm. Tractors of this size covered most field work from tillage to harvest transport on mid-sized farms.
When buying a tractor of this age second-hand, the condition of the engine and cooling system, wear on the clutch and gearbox, and the tightness of the hydraulics matter. Rust on the frame, axles and mudguards, together with the availability of spare parts, which given the once-high production numbers are comparatively easy to find in the remanufacture and used-parts market, determine the further extent of repair work needed.
