The MTS 50 was built from 1961 to 1985 at the Minsk Tractor Works – a production run of nearly a quarter century that makes the MTS 50 one of the longest-lived series models of the plant, which has built tractors in Minsk since 1946 and, over that time, grew into one of the world's largest tractor makers.

The four-cylinder diesel engine of 4,750 cm³ displacement produces 41 kW (55 hp) at 1,600 rpm and reaches a top speed of 35 km/h. With an unladen weight of 3,250 kg, a length of 3,815 mm, a width of 1,970 mm, a height of 2,485 mm and a wheelbase of 2,360 mm, the MTS 50 is among the lighter four-cylinder field tractors of its plant.
At 35 km/h the MTS 50 falls within today's driving licence category L up to 40 km/h; the PTO runs at the standardised speed of 540 rpm. The long production run of over two decades points to a robust, little-changed basic design, as was common for standard mid-power tractors in Soviet agriculture.
When buying a tractor with such a long production run second-hand, the exact version and the actual build year matter especially, along with the condition of the engine, cooling system and gearbox, and the tightness of the hydraulics. Rust on the frame, axles and mudguards, together with the availability of spare and wear parts, which are comparatively easy to find given the high number built, determine the extent of repair work needed.
