The MTS 82 was built in 1976 at the Minsk Tractor Works, which has built tractors in Minsk since 1946 and grew, through the decades of the Soviet Union, into one of the world's largest tractor makers; the 1970s were a period of high series production for the plant, supplying agriculture across the entire USSR and its partner states.

The water-cooled four-cylinder diesel engine of 4,750 cm³ displacement produces 59 kW (80 hp) and gives the tractor a top speed of 32 km/h. With an unladen weight of 5,585 kg, a length of 3,930 mm, a width of 1,970 mm and a height of 2,800 mm, the MTS 82 sits in the mid weight class of four-cylinder field tractors of its era.
At 32 km/h the MTS 82 falls within today's driving licence category L up to 40 km/h; the PTO runs at the standardised speeds of 540 or 1,000 rpm. A four-cylinder of 4.75 litres displacement at around 60 kW was, in the 1970s, one of the most widely built motorisations of Soviet farm machinery and covered most field work from tillage to harvest transport.
When buying a tractor of this age second-hand, the condition of the engine and cooling system, wear on the clutch and gearbox, and the tightness of the hydraulics matter most. Rust on the frame, axles and mudguards, together with the availability of spare parts, which for this build year are mostly found in the remanufacture and used-parts market, decide the further extent of repair work needed.
