MTZ-5M/5L: the tractor of the Minsk Tractor Works from 1958 to 1960, four-cylinder with 45 hp at 1,500 rpm, 2,750 kg unladen weight
The MTZ-5M/5L was built from 1958 to 1960 at the Minsk Tractor Works, which has built tractors in Minsk since 1946 and was, through the decades of the Soviet Union, one of the most important tractor makers for agriculture across the entire USSR; the model followed shortly after the MTZ-1 in the plant's early type series.

The four-cylinder diesel engine of 4,050 cm³ displacement produces 45 hp at 1,500 rpm and reaches a top speed of 22.4 km/h. With an unladen weight of 2,750 kg, a length of 4,095 mm, a width of 1,884 mm, a height of 2,373 mm and a wheelbase of 2,450 mm, the MTZ-5M/5L is built correspondingly light and compact.
At 22.4 km/h the MTZ-5M/5L lies far below the 40 km/h limit of today's driving licence category L; the PTO runs at the standardised speed of 540 rpm. Tractors of this generation replaced older tracked tractors and the first post-war models in Soviet agriculture of the late 1950s and stood at the start of the series production that, in the following decades, made the plant one of the world's largest tractor makers.
Surviving examples are collector's vehicles today; when buying one, the condition of the engine and cooling system, the originality of sheet-metal parts and the driver's station, and the availability of spare parts, which for a tractor of this age can mostly only be obtained through custom remanufacture or from other collectors, all matter. Rust on the frame, axles and mudguards often decides the scope of restoration work needed.
