Atkinson Vehicles was founded in 1907 in Preston, Lancashire, and built heavy trucks for British long-haul haulage and construction; in 1970 the company merged with Seddon to form Seddon Atkinson, under which the vehicles continued to be built for decades afterwards.

Alongside AEC, Foden and ERF, Atkinson was one of the storied British truck marques of the post-war era, focused on heavy tractor units and construction vehicles for the home market, before the Seddon merger ended its independent brand history; until then the trucks often carried their own powerful diesel engines and sturdy axle designs built for hard building-site work.
On these older British trucks, the condition of the diesel engine and clutch, rust on frame and cab, the operation of brakes and suspension, and the condition of gearbox and axles all count; spare parts today come practically only through British classic-commercial-vehicle specialists and Seddon Atkinson enthusiasts.
