The MF 1747 is powered by a four-cylinder indirect-injection diesel engine of 2,197 cm³ displacement, delivering 47 hp or 34.6 kW at a rated speed of 2,600 rpm. The gearbox, with 12 forward and 12 reverse gears, allows a design top speed of 32 km/h.
A four-cylinder with indirect, pre-chamber injection was the common design in compact ranges of that era, before direct injection took over; it runs quieter and more smoothly than a direct-injection unit, at somewhat lower efficiency. At a top speed of 32 km/h the MF 1747 falls into the German T licence class, and a PTO at the standard 540 rpm speed is common for a tractor of this power class; the 12 forward and 12 reverse gears cover both slow field gears for tillage and faster gears for yard and road transport.
When buying a used indirect-injection diesel, the cold-start condition of the glow-plug system matters, since such engines are more sensitive to worn glow plugs than direct-injection units. The 12/12 gearbox should be checked for synchroniser condition and clean gear changes, as should the hydraulics for tightness.
