AGCO Fendt 500 Vario
1 model in this series
Fendt 516 Vario (500 Vario) – the stepless mid-range tractor from Marktoberdorf: four-cylinder diesel of 4,038 cm³, 163 hp/120 kW and 6,400 kg unladen weight, model year 2012
Fendt was founded by Xaver Fendt in Marktoberdorf in the Allgäu region and has belonged to the AGCO group since 1997, which runs the brand as its premium tractor segment built around its own stepless Vario transmission. The 500 Vario range positions itself as a more compact complement below Fendt's larger ranges, for farms with medium-sized areas.

The 516 Vario is powered by a four-cylinder diesel engine of 4,038 cm³ displacement, delivering 163 hp or 120 kW at a rated speed of 2,100 rpm, and runs on diesel, RME or with AdBlue. At 6,400 kg unladen weight, 4,453 mm length, 2,451 mm width and 2,965 mm height on a 2,560 mm wheelbase, the machine reaches a design top speed of 50 km/h.
The stepless Vario transmission matches travel speed to engine revs without gear steps and without any interruption of tractive force, which gives an advantage over stepped gearboxes in field work with varying load, such as ploughing or with driven implements. At a permitted top speed of 50 km/h the tractor falls into the German T licence class; the option of combining diesel with RME or AdBlue points to more recent exhaust after-treatment.
When buying a used Vario tractor, the function of the transmission hydraulics and the variable-displacement pumps matters most, since a fault in the stepless drive is more involved to fix than in a classic geared transmission. It is also worth checking the AdBlue system and the condition of the exhaust after-treatment, as well as cab mounts and hydraulic couplings for implements.
