AEC (Associated Equipment Company) was founded in 1912 in Southall, west London, and built commercial vehicles until truck production ended in 1979; the Matador, built from 1939, was a four-wheel-drive artillery tractor for the British Army in the Second World War and remained in civilian and military use for decades afterwards.

As a field-gun tractor and recovery vehicle, the AEC Matador shaped the British Army's fleet during the Second World War and afterwards stayed in service with fire brigades, on building sites and as a sturdy base lorry, before being gradually retired through the 1960s and 1970s; its rugged six-cylinder diesel and simple mechanicals made it a popular basis for civilian recovery trucks and fire-brigade conversions long after military service ended.
On these historic vehicles, the condition of the six-cylinder diesel and clutch, rust on frame and cab, the operation of the four-wheel drive and transfer case, and the condition of the cable winch all count; spare parts today come only through specialist military-vehicle and classic-vehicle dealers.
