Zanello CMZ – Argentina's tractors from Las Varillas: 2080 to 4180, the articulated 4200 and MX 220 to AT 250, MWM and Deutz engines, 60 to 240 kW, successor Pauny
Zanello of Las Varillas in the province of Córdoba was Argentina's largest tractor maker from the 1970s into the 2000s – CMZ stands for Compañía Metalúrgica Zanello, the company name under which the tractors were built. The firm began as a supplier, built its own tractors from 1978 and became known for the articulated large tractors for the soy fields of the Pampas; in 2001 Zanello went bankrupt in the economic crisis, the workforce took over the plant, and since 2002 the designs have continued under the name Pauny. The type logic: the four-digit numbers order size and output – 2080 to 2140 the standard tractors, 4080 to 4180 the four-wheel-drive models, the 4200 Series 2 the big articulated tractor – MD, MX and AT mark the late ranges of the 1990s, whose number gives the output in hp (MX 250 about 250 hp). The engines came from MWM International and Deutz of Argentine manufacture, in individual models from YTO of China.

The register lists 15 versions with 60 to 240 kW (80 to 320 hp) from four- and six-cylinders – MWM TD 229, Deutz F4L 913, F6L 913 and BF6L 913 – at rated speeds of 2,300 to 2,500 rpm, all diesel.
Zanello's articulated tractors were the Argentine answer to the North American large tractors: simple technology, engines with local parts supply and prices farmers could still pay in the peso crisis – reasons why Pauny builds the range to this day.
Used Zanello tractors are common in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay; when buying, engine condition, gearbox and articulation joint, hydraulics and parts supply through Pauny and the engine makers are what count.
