Yanmar of Osaka has built water-cooled diesel engines since the 1930s; the early TF models cooled without a pump via an open header tank on the thermosiphon principle, while later versions received a closed circuit with a radiator. The TF range is among the most-built small diesel engines in the world and was produced for decades in enormous numbers for irrigation pumps, threshers and simple farm machinery, chiefly across Asia and Africa. The register lists here 9 versions: the single-cylinder TF70, TF90, TF120, TF120N-L, TF150N-L and TF160, as well as the larger TF300 and the equally single-cylinder TS190 and TS230. Output ranges from 5.1 to 22.1 kW (7 to 30 hp) at displacements of 382 to 1,472 cm³ and rated speeds between 2,200 and 2,400 rpm; all engines are water-cooled naturally aspirated single-cylinder units, with dry weight between 67.5 and 260 kg.
The TF range stands for the durable, easy-to-service small diesel that has, across generations, driven irrigation pumps, small boats and threshers in developing and emerging markets; the larger TS models extend the programme with more powerful single-cylinder units for power generation and larger pump installations.
When buying used, on the water-cooled TF engines, the tightness and corrosion condition of the water jacket matter, on older versions with an open header tank its fill level and freedom from rust, plus compression and oil consumption and a working glow-plug system; on the TS models, also crankshaft bearing play. Parts for the TF range, owing to its huge spread, are available worldwide even outside the official Yanmar network.
